Most readers assume a selank before and after account describes a comparable amount to the next one. It usually does not, and the reason is unusually specific to this compound: it is sold both as a vial of powder and as a nasal spray, and the word "dose" means something different in each.

A selank before and after account is a format claim first

Someone writing "two sprays, twice a day" and someone writing "20 units" are not using different words for the same thing. They are describing two different delivery systems, each with its own conversion from a reading to a mass, and neither conversion is possible without a number the account rarely gives.

For the vial, the missing number is the volume of bacteriostatic water added. For the spray, it is the volume the pump delivers per actuation. Both are set after purchase, both are invisible afterwards, and both sit directly under the mass anyone is trying to describe.

Two accounts, one labelled mass

Take two people who each bought material labelled 5 mg and prepared it differently.

The first reconstituted the vial with 1 mL, giving 5 divided by 1, or 5 mg per mL. Drawing 0.1 mL on a U-100 syringe, which fills 1 mL at 100 units so that 0.1 mL reads as 10 units, removes 5 times 0.1, which is 0.5 mg or 500 mcg.

The second put the same 5 mg into a nasal spray bottle filled to 5 mL, giving 5 divided by 5, or 1 mg per mL. Assume a pump the manufacturer states delivers 0.1 mL per actuation, since that figure varies by pump and has to be read off the hardware rather than guessed. One actuation then delivers 1 times 0.1, which is 0.1 mg, or 100 mcg.

Same printed milligrams. One account's single event is five times the other's, and neither writer said anything untrue.

Extend both accounts over an interval and the gap widens rather than closing.

Say each ran for six weeks. The first, at one 500 mcg withdrawal a day, has used 42 times 0.5 mg, which is 21 mg, or more than four vials of labelled material. The second, at two actuations a day at 100 mcg each, has used 42 times 0.2 mg, which is 8.4 mg, under two bottles. The sentence "six weeks of Selank" covers both.

Bottle longevity is worth its own division. A 5 mL bottle at 0.1 mL per actuation is 5 divided by 0.1, or 50 actuations in theory. In practice a new pump needs priming before it delivers a full stroke, and the dip tube cannot reach the last of the liquid, so the usable count is lower and the shortfall is not stated on the label. A 5 mg vial drawn 500 mcg at a time gives 5 divided by 0.5, which is exactly 10 withdrawals, with the same caveat about residual volume in the vial and needle.

The pump is the least documented component

In the vial account, the uncertain input is a volume the preparer measured and could have written down. In the spray account, it is a property of a piece of plastic that came with the bottle, and it is often not stated anywhere the buyer can see.

Nasal pumps are manufactured to deliver a fixed volume per stroke, and different pumps are built to different volumes. If a bottle was filled by the seller, the actuation volume belongs in the product description. If the buyer transferred reconstituted liquid into their own spray bottle, it belongs in the pump's specification. Where neither is available, the mass per actuation cannot be calculated at all, and any microgram figure quoted alongside it was assumed rather than derived.

Halving the actuation volume halves the mass and doubles the number of actuations a bottle yields. Using the 1 mg per mL bottle above, a pump delivering 0.05 mL gives 1 times 0.05, which is 0.05 mg or 50 mcg per actuation, and 5 divided by 0.05, which is 100 nominal actuations. Nothing about the bottle looks different. The account that says "two sprays" has described half as much.

Cost per mg is the one figure that crosses formats cleanly, because it divides price by labelled mass and ignores how the liquid is delivered. On assumed figures, a 5 mg vial at 45 currency units is 45 divided by 5, or 9 per mg, and a pre-filled 5 mg spray at 60 is 12 per mg. The spray costs more per mg and includes hardware the vial does not, which is a fair trade to make knowingly and a poor one to make by accident.

The evidence behind the outcome being claimed

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the endogenous peptide tuftsin, developed in Russia and studied mainly as an anxiolytic. It is a registered medicine in Russia, and the clinical literature produced within that system, in humans, is real work that should not be waved away as though it did not exist.

It is equally wrong to treat that registration as if it were a Western approval. Selank holds no authorisation from the FDA, the EMA or the MHRA, and there is no genuine registered Western trial of it. A search of a Western trials registry returns records that match the text and turn out to be studies of unrelated interventions, so no trial identifier appears anywhere on this page.

That pairing matters for a results post more than it does for most compounds. The outcomes at stake, anxiety and related states, are measured with rating scales administered to people under structured conditions. A post describing how someone felt is not a rating scale, and the difference is not a matter of rigour but of what was actually recorded.

Why this outcome is the hardest kind to self-report

Anxiety fluctuates on its own. It responds to sleep, workload, seasons, caffeine, exercise and whatever prompted someone to start looking for a solution, which is usually a bad stretch rather than an average one.
