How to get Semax is a shorter question than it looks, because three of the four routes end in the same place and the fourth ends nowhere. Ranked by what each asks of you, the answer runs: buy a research vial domestically, buy one from abroad and wait, try to find a prescriber and fail, or buy a pre-mixed spray whose milligrams nobody has stated. This page prices the friction rather than describing it.
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide, Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro, the ACTH(4-7) fragment carrying a Pro-Gly-Pro tail that slows enzymatic breakdown. PubChem lists it at CID 9811102, formula C37H51N9O10S, molecular weight 813.9. It was developed and registered in Russia and holds no FDA approval for any indication, which is the fact that closes the prescription route and opens the research one.

Friction is not just money. It is days, uncertainty and the chance of ending with nothing, so the table prices all four in the same row.

Route 4 is the one most people start with, which is why it gets its own section rather than a line in a table. Route 1 is where the majority realistically land, and its only real question is which of two certificates covers the box you receive.
Why no prescriber can write this one
There is no approved Semax product anywhere in Drugs@FDA, which means no NDC, no label, no pharmacy stock and nothing for a prescriber to write. Russian registration does not travel; it is a fact about another regulator, not evidence of efficacy by Western standards, and this page reports it rather than adopting it.
The compounding route is the one worth understanding properly, because it is the one competing pages garble. Semax appears in no category of FDA's 503A bulk drug substances lists, last updated on 14 May 2026. It was nominated, it was placed in category 2 under the interim policies while the agency evaluated it, and the nomination was then withdrawn by the nominator. FDA's safety-risks page records that table as substances previously in category 2 that were withdrawn by the nominators, and Semax is one of seventeen entries in it.
So a page telling you Semax is FDA Category 2 or banned from compounding is quoting a status that has lapsed, and the correction makes the door no more open. To compound legally from bulk substance a pharmacy needs the substance on a bulks list, covered by an applicable monograph, or present in an approved drug. Semax is none of the three. Why FDA stopped where it did, and what it means for testing
The agency's own sentence is short and it is worth reading before comparing vendors:
Compounded drugs containing semax (heptapeptide) may pose risk for immunogenicity for certain routes of administration due to the potential for aggregation and peptide-related impurities. FDA has no, or limited, safety-related information for proposed routes of administration. Therefore, the agency lacks sufficient information to know whether the drug would cause harm if administered to humans.
That is not a finding of harm. It is a statement that the evidence to settle the question does not exist. What makes it useful rather than merely discouraging is that both named mechanisms are measurable. Aggregation and peptide-related impurities show up in chromatography, and the contamination that compounds the risk shows up in endotoxin and microbial testing.
Which turns route selection into a documents question. The Kovera Labs certificate for batch 30-05260628 reports purity of 99.886% against a stated 98% minimum, 11.23 mg of net content against a 10 mg label, endotoxin under 0.20 EU/mL by kinetic chromogenic LAL to USP Chapter 85 against a 0.5 EU/mL acceptance limit, a rapid sterility screen with no growth, and an ICP-MS metals panel. The February MZ Biolabs certificate for lot 30-01260229 reports 99.75% purity, identity at 813.41 Da against 813.35 expected and 10.12 mg measured, and carries neither endotoxin nor sterility testing. Same listing, same price, different evidence.
Importing it yourself, and the friction with no number
Overseas listings usually quote the lowest sticker on the page, and a sticker is not a landed cost. Three costs get added after checkout and none of them is printed: freight, transit time on material that ships cold, and the chance the parcel never arrives. That last one has an unpleasant property for anyone pricing per milligram: a seized package leaves you with zero milligrams, so the cost per milligram is not high, it is undefined.
The paperwork is usually worse than the freight. Certificates on these listings are often generic rather than batch-specific, or undated, or carry a lot number that appears nowhere on the vial. A certificate that cannot be matched to your box answers none of the questions the previous section raised, whatever figures it prints.
Set against that, the domestic route finishes its arithmetic at checkout: $30.00, a dispatch cut-off, free carriage over $250, and a lot code you can match to a PDF the same evening. The spray route, and the milligrams it forgets to mention
Route 3 deserves more than a table row, because for years it was how most people met this compound. Semax reached consumers as a nasal spray long before research vials were easy to order, and plenty of listings still sell it that way. The objection here is not that sprays are inferior. It is that they are quoted in a unit that hides the mass.
Insist on the conversion and it becomes tractable. A solution labelled 1% is 1 g per 100 mL, which is 10 mg/mL, so a 3 mL bottle at 1% holds 30 mg and the same bottle at 0.1% holds 3 mg. Two labels that look almost identical differ tenfold in content. If a listing gives only millilitres, or only a count of sprays, it has told you the size of the container rather than what is in it, and no rate can be calculated.
The format changes two other things. A pre-mixed solution started its shelf clock at the factory, where lyophilised powder has not, so part of what you pay for is stability you cannot inspect. And a multi-use bottle generally contains a preservative, which is an extra ingredient rarely quantified on the label and directly relevant to the sterility question. Two footnotes keep that honest. Solvent volume changes resolution, not value: 1 mL gives 10 mg/mL and 100 units, and a milligram still cost $3.00. And the 11.23 mg line means a vial reconstituted at 2 mL is really 5.615 mg/mL, so ten units hold 561.5 mcg rather than 500, a 12.3% gap no syringe can display.
